Research conducted at the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute addresses our growing health challenges while adding to the evidence base for integrative health practices. With a history of awards from national funding agencies and private donors, our multidisciplinary researchers are dedicated to exploring the science of illness versus wellness, publishing and sharing findings, and improving lives.
Our laboratories consist of students and scholars from various backgrounds who are passionate about shedding more light on the efficacy of integrative treatments. With the transformational gift from Susan and Henry Samueli, the Samueli Institute will house 15 endowed chairs whose mission will be to explore areas of integrative health.
Our current research is focused on heart disease prevention, the effects and mechanisms of acupuncture, and the use of mindfulness by health care providers to promote a greater sense of personal well-being and improve safety. We are also assessing how integrative therapies like acupuncture can aid in the nonpharmacologic management of pain in the hospital setting. Our current federally-funded clinical trials are using innovative complementary health approaches to prevent and treat disease. For instance, we are examining the novel use of IV chelation therapy that removes environmental toxins to treat heart disease and diabetes.

Research in Dr. Malik’s laboratory is focusing on the possible use of electroacupuncture as a treatment for cardiovascular conditions.
Through the utilization of mindfulness in the workplace, Dr. Jessica Drew de Paz’s research seeks to offer a new paradigm for creating safe and healthy workplaces across a variety of industries.
