Food As Medicine: Foods For Reducing Inflammation

By uci_admin

FOOD AS MEDICINE: Turmeric

Excessive inflammation is associated with an increased risk of chronic disease. The foods we eat impact inflammation levels. Phytonutrients are colorful compounds found in food that help the body better manage inflammation. Certain foods are especially beneficial for keeping excessive, unnecessary inflammation at bay.

Turmeric: Curcumin is the bright yellow compound found in turmeric which is responsible for the root’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The anti-inflammatory benefits of curcumin occur at 1 tsp turmeric spice daily or supplemental doses between 500 mg and 3000 mg. Discuss supplementation with your doctor because curcumin supplements have the potential to interact with anticoagulants and blood thinners. Try adding turmeric spice to scrambled eggs, blending into smoothies, tossing with roasted veggies, adding to rice, spicing up soups, or making tea by simmering turmeric with coconut milk, cinnamon, and honey.
